Bathroom was re-modeled some years ago and the plumber cut off the soil pipe in the bathroom. Currently there is no external vent anywhere in the house.
New plumber has said this is dangerous as gases could build up and explode and is suggesting that the pipe should be put back through the existing hole in the roof!!!
Is our house safe?

I wouldn't think your house will blow up but you should reinstate the vent to atmosphere as per building regs. :D

dont suppose he put a whatsists name valve on it did he

this is a whatsits name valve

you fit one in situations like yours, i bet you have one

Its an Air Admittance Valve which do not let the gases out i.e vent and should not be used in this case. :wink:

oh, i thought thats what they were for.

where would you put one of these then if not as i thought on the top of a soil stack in the "toilet"

They are only for internal sub stacks which is an extra soil stack that is installed when an extra toilet is fitted.

AAVs are allowed on sub stacks if the property is already served with a soil and vent pipe. :D

That's complete nonsense - excess pressure in the foul waste pipework will find its way out through the WC trap (amongst others).

Is our house safe?
Yes. But it might be smelly.

Now then; excuse me for one moment....

No you bl**ding well don't fit one of those, you absolute numbskull.

I don't understand how you can make 20,000+ posts on this site and still not realise that:

(a) you have almost zero plumbing skills and knowledge;
(b) an AAV does not behave as a vent;
(c) when you know nothing you should just shut up.

Please do everyone a favour and stay away from the Plumbing and Central Heating forum.
And the Electrics UK forum.
And any other forum that requires knowledge that you don't have.

FFS. :roll:
