I've been told by one installer that putting home/solar batteries in a detached garage isn't allowed as it's an outbuilding and this is against some recent regulation. Another installer didn't mention this and recommended installing in the garage. Which of them is correct, any advice appreciated.

Thanks

The change as far as I am aware is you can't put the batteries in a loft space since if the house caught on fire, the fire brigade could not fight the fire in case the batteries exploded.

I have heard of not regulations stopping batteries from being fitted in a garage, in fact that would be a better place as less likely to be a risk in a fire.

Agreed to ericmark. What was the proposed location from the installer who said it is not allowed?

It could be just for them to save money... if the outbuilding far away you need to digup land and lay SWA cable etc.. more work...cost more... was this a fixed price quote?

Thanks both, they want to put them on the side wall of the house which is about 3-4 metres closer than the garage. On the other hand they want to dig up the driveway anyway to put in a cable to connect the solar panels (which will be on the garage) to the house! The other installer that I mentioned said that the existing cable from the main consumer unit to the garage was fine for the solar panels (about 4 kWp).

When I queried this he phoned his 'expert' to double check both these points, they said yes definitely need to dig up (at least to find conduit that cables could be pulled through) and definitely can't install batteries in an outbuilding. We are in Scotland if that makes a difference.
