I thought the limit was 4kW?

The 4kW limit was a limit on what you could claim FIT on. You can have more than 4kW but you must fill out a form to DNO and get approval.

I was thinking about solar of some sort (our energy contract runs out in May)

I was thinking that a system which did not connect to the network might be possible DIY -but anything electric which connects to the house electrics has got to be notifiable??

Im looking into these options:

1) solar PV powering a immersion heater and using the hot water tank as a thermal store

2) solar pv with a power wall

3) solar thermal -with a dual coil cylinder

the problem is that doesnt solve the fact my heating is still gas central heating

I don't see why not. I would involve my friendly electrician when it comes to connecting it all up of course.

It might be different for others, but I think my of my overall bill the split of costs is 75% electric and 25% gas, so anything to lessen the electricity taken from the grid is a good thing.

Nothing stopping you installing your own system, except (unless you have it signed off by an accredited installer) you won't have an MCS certificate. Do you need one? Not necessarily. You can't claim FIT and you might run into a hiccup if you're planning to sell your house but otherwise you could do without one.

Solar Thermal is great if gravity fed, otherwise its pain. If you fit Air sourced heat pump (otherwise known as air con) you can reduce your gas heating in the winter a little and have air con.

If you can have an EV charging on the drive, most days, the power wall may not be needed and is a big chunk of the cash.

Does anyone have a small wind turbine in their garden and is it cost-effective?? Small I mean attaches to your wall
