soldering AAA batteries

I see a lot of YT vides where they do this to replace the batteries inside of mobile phones that are no longer made
Will the heat of the soldering iron not destroy the battery?

Are you sure you’re not thinking of soldering tabs welded onto batteries? You can buy batteries with tabs on already

..but if you’re having to go to such lengths because the battery is no longer made, what good is the phone likely to be, really?

You would normally use a spot welder not a soldering iron as the heat is applied quickly with a welder and as you say an iron can damage the batteries.

I have soldered wires onto 1.5v AA batteries before and It has not harmed them, do it quickly though and prepare the surface well before soldering, a quick 1 second dab of solder will do no harm, if you are hopeless at soldering and will be arsing about for 10 minutes, then all that heat might damage the battery

I understand your unnecessarily shouty point but lithium batteries like 18650s are frequently sold with tabs on for soldering/messing with..

if you are buying batteries designed for such thhings then fair enough - the important point is - don't mess about with lithium type btteries inside devices unless you fully understand what you are doing, these things can be very dangerous

That, depends. I have done it several times, repairing various battery packs, but care is needed. A good hot iron is needed, with good thermal capacity. The battery terminals need to be clean, and in many cases, the soldering will need a more aggressive flux. Plumbers flux, works well, but must be cleaned off after soldering.

Particularly if the batteries have stainless steel ends when a special flux is required.
