I occasionally have to solder things often up ladders and find it hard due to only having 2 hands.
I liked these Gizmos, not just for led but holding 2 wires, but not the price.
Anyone know of any cheaper alternatives, i know about the stands with Alligater clips but not really ideal up a ladder

Large Bulldog clips, with a neodymium magnet screwed to them, or 2 clips bolted together so you can clip onto something then clip whatever your soldering into it.

I was always led to believe that if the joint isnt mechanically sound ie self supporting then soldering is not the answer.

I believe thats correct with larger cables with some load on them, im only soldering cables smaller than 0.5mm with only 350ma on 12volt,
