Soldering near cable

Can I safely solder in here? I need to extend these pipes down for radiator fitting. If yes, what can I use to protect the cable from the flame?

I use plasterboard offcuts.

Move the cables as far as you can.

That can be a difficult one - as suggested, move the cables as far away as possible. They shouldn't have any direct heat on them. Damp towels etc. A heat mat may work but there is still some heat transferred if direct heat is applied to it which may be enough to soften the insulator. Need to watch the wood for the box section too.

I'd cut through the timber each side of pipe then pull pipe out of clips forward.
Cut clean extend as required solder out in open push back into place.

Do you think you will get them clean enough to solder with all that paint on them as they are.

If you get pipe where you can get blowlamp on it warm up paint clean with steel wool.
Otherwise scrape clean use cleaning tape or similar check with mirror behind to make sure clean.

To remove paint... Grips held slightly tight on the pipe then rotate back n forth so the teeth scour the paint and chip it off, then back of a Stanley blade in the knife then polish to shiny with an Abrasive strip.

Protect flammables with lots of wet teatowels and a burning mat. I use tin flashing pieces that I always get roofers to donate to me.

In the worst places I also use this, it also helps to spread the heat if you can't get under a pipe say in a floor using yorkies



As suggested, like grips I use the curved pipe grip section of a large pair of pliers to 'break' the thick paint off of 15mm pipes
