hey fellas,

probably easy but..

i've had enough of using compressions fittings and want to start soldering. I get the important stuff, cleaning, fluxing, not over heating etc but do you install the pipework first and then solder or solder what you can before installing? Do those mats really stop surrounds burning?

thanks as usual

Get the pipes in place as much as possible before soldering. Otherwise it may not line up when you go to put the pre soldered pipes into place. Only solder difficult to access stuff before fitting.

And yes, mats are great in tight spaces for preventing scorches.

You usually have to solder in-situ, otherwise you find that nothing aligns properly.

When running the pipes, clip them well away from the soldered joints, or else you'll melt the clips ;)

EDIT... Crossed with Ian again :)

P.S. an old ceramic wall tile also works well to prevent things being scorched.

P.P.S. Invest in a small fire extinguisher, or at least have a bucket of water standing by, just in case.
