Solvent Gloss over Solvent Primer

Hello guys.

Normally, I prime bare wood, undercoat, then gloss.

I am now repainting previously painted surfaces.

I just did not check this paint is primer.

May be a silly question, but will gloss work well over the primer?.

You could get away with oil based satinwood or eggshell over primer, but not oil based gloss.

However, it sounds like you are confused about primers and undercoats.

Bare timber needs to be primed, It seals the wood. Undercoat then provides an extra seal that prevents the top coat being being sucked in- sorry, that isn't awfully technical...

If you are using waterbased paints, they generally work as primers and undercoats. You apply the first coat as a primer and then the second as an undercoat.

Without more info, it is difficult to comment further.

Apologies.

All the woodwork has been painted before. Finished in Brilliant White solvent based gloss paint, clean brushes in white spirit.

On this occasion, woodwork sanded down, dusted, vacuumed, wiped clean with Sugar Soap.

It was intended to use Undercoat, picked up Primer, did the first coat, and afterwards realised it is Primer.

Not sure if Ok to apply Gloss over the Primer.
