sony vaio desktop problem

hi folks, first post, glad i found this place.

i have a sony vaio laptop, not sure of model but about 6 years old.
it runs pretty smoothly for about 5 minutes and then all of a sudden green lines (not so unsimilar from the matrix) appear at the top of the screen and it freezes.

then i have to reboot. but when i do it comes with a message that i should back up the hard drive immediately. however i am unable to do it due to the fact that it shuts down after 5 minutes.

has this happened before and do you know ways round it?

the fan works fine and the battery is relatively new and hard drive is only 2 years old.

not seen this before im afraid, i can only guess it's Motherboard or memory related, have you tried reseating the memory modules? Although i doubt it's that to be honest either display or some other component failing on motherboard.

Best bet is to talk over on Sony Vaio support area, forums are there too.
