my neighbor put in a wood burning stove last year and since then I have had a layer of soot on all my stuff in my loft. I live in a semi detached house and we share a chimney breast. Our fires are off set from each other. I don't know if the soot is just coming out of the top of the chimney and blowing up under our eaves or if it is coming in through the chimney breast in the loft.

did he have the chimnie lined
did he involve building control to certify his work

Wood burning stoves don't generally produce black soot it is more common for a grey/white ash to be produced

Soot is generally seen as a CO indicator; you need a pro to check this asap.

If you get your wood stove burning well and then restrict the air input to reduce the heat output then I would expect it to produce a considerable amount of carbon monoxide.
