I live in an upper floor mainsonette, and the back bedroom has stairs down to our back garden.

I am going to install soundproofing under the floor boards, but unsure what to do with the wall between the stairs and the downstairs room, and also under the stairs.

The wall in my half is essentially a triangle, with 50mm partition. I can happily fill that with mineral wool, and and some acoustic plasterboard.

However, what to do about under the stairs? The staircase is pretty solid, probably 100 years old. Do I just lift up the treads and stuff those with mineral wool? How would I do that without damaging them, or the sides?

It worries me that all my efforts in the floor/wall will be wasted if sound can easily leak around the edge through the stairs.

filling the voids will do very little as you say the sound will travel through the structure
good carpet and underlay will reduce the inpact noise

if the stairs are creaking and groaning then they will need tightening up regluing or strengthening
