I have just added the Special Characters feature to the site.

The box can be found below the Smilies box on the left when you are posting. Click 'Special Characters' and they will appear, (similarly click 'Smilies' to return to the Smilies). There are 28 special characters, that can be inserted by clicking on them (like the smilies).

Any problems, let me know ;)

I like the degrees 20° and the sq 2m² and the fractions ½ ⅛ ⅞

"pi" looks like a "n" to me π r ²

and they seem to insert a leading blank, is that right?

B 4 i √u r u ≥ 16 ?

works OK

There is a leading and trailing slash on each inserted character.

The pi looking like a n is sadly down to the font, same with the beta. The other character not added is the earth/ground symbol, the character does exist but is not included in IE when tested so was left out. I may look into adding these as images instead of characters to improve clarity.

I thought my browser had updated

Will save me copying and pasting from MS Word Ta :D

How do others feel about the leading and trailing spaces?

Having the special characters is a great improvement over the previous.
The leading space is a little annoyance but nothing I can't live with.

But it would be preferable to not have them.

The trailing spaces are hardly noticable to me.
But I can imagine they could be annoying. e.g.
π r ²

It's the leading space that is the most annoying for me.

Like writing a cable size. At the moment you you end up with a gap in it which you have to go back and delete i.e. 2.5mm ² , when it should be 2.5mm² without the gap.

That makes sense, perhaps it'll be better to remove both spaces then, this will then make it more conventional like a normal keyboard button.
