Spluttering hot water

Hello all,

I have a vented hot water/GCH system. The hot water has been spluttering for some years now after I had the GCH pump replaced.

I thought it would get better once the air had worked through, but this hasnt happened.

Where is all this air coming from? How can I (or a plumber) stop it coming in?

Also, I have noticed a damp patch on an interior wall close to where radiator pipes run. If there was a leak in these pipes causing the dampness, could air be sucked into the system at the same place?

The radiator circuit is separate to the hot water if its indirect so it has nothing to do with it but still needs looking at.
If you have a mixer tap hold your hand over the spout with a towel and turn the hot tap on then turn the cold on for a while and it should force the air back into the cold water storage cistern.

Before you do above:

check the large cold water tank ball valve is working and filling fast.

And check the gate valve for cold supply to cylinder is fully open.

Half opened valve can cause hot water to spluttering because it is sucking air from vent pipe above cold water tank.

OK, all the valves seem to be full open apart from one valve at the bottom of the cylinder which was loose and can turn either way.

How can I tell if this is the right valve or not?

That'll be a by-pass valve, put it back to where it was!

Whats one of those when its at home?

Its more or less where it was (within 90 degree turn for certain). Is it really important that its exactly where it was?

Are the hot water temperatures set too high? On the boiler and an imersion tank if you have one?
