You only really need to sponge float 'one coat' plasters. You rule it off so that it is nicely 'closed in'

Then when it has gone off enough so that you can rub the sponge float on it so that it brings up some 'fat' BUT does not push the plaster around, you can rub it up. When you get a layer of fat on it, trowel it up and close it in with a trowel, like finish.

You can sponge float multi or board in stuations like -

if you have a heavy coat on and it might sag or blister

if it has gone off a bit far

if you want a flatter wall than just trowelling up ( such as where light plays along it from a window , or downlighter.

This is not generally done, but a sponge float is a handy tool to have in the box when skimming. It is worth trying in a small area to get a feel for it.

It has been mentioned before here about in day's of yore we used to put on , lay down and sometimes rub up finish with a wooden float, before trowelling up.
