am i right in thinking that if an existing socket has two cables going into it i can take a spur off that, but if it only has one then you cant?

me's good at lectrics

Not necessarily....

You should only attempt the following if you feel confident working with electricity.

A reasonably foolproof way to test if two cables at a point are on the ring is to disconnect them, fit a terminal block on the end of each & reinstate the supply. If both ends are live, there is a reasonable chance it is on a ring.

The other way is more involved - to isolate the circuit the socket is on, disconnect both legs from the CU, then do ring continuity on them. Then break the ring at the socket & do another ring continuity check.

But then, as you are good at "lectrics", you'll know this anyway.
