a continuity tester might be a good idea then. If you disconnect the ring main at the consumer unit and test Live to Live, Neutral to neutral and earth to earth if you have a ring they should bell out.
Of course you may have an incomplete ring due to a loose conection or a DIY bodge up from a previous owner.
