Not necessarily the wedges, just fixed a few squeaks on ours (5 years old) and all the wedges were tight and glued in place.
The risers are mdf and are nailed into the back edge of the treads, when the carper was fitted the carpet fitter nailed gripperrod to the back edge of the tread (OK) and the lower edge of the riser (Not OK). In doing this he loosened most of the nails holding the risers causing squeaks.
Got access to the underneath and glued and screwed the risers to the back edge of the stairs. Will glue the gripper next time!
One of those jobs which takes a day and SWMBO doesn't understand why I did it!
