Stagnant water smell in house

Can anyone HELP please, got a terrible stagnant water smell in house for some time now, took bath panel off etc, nothing there. but smell is same in cupboard directly under the bathroom in hall. The main waste pipe comes down through this cupboard and have had leaks in the past. Is there any way of testing or finding out where the smell is originating from. Have used drain cleaners etc. desperate housewife!!!!

Have you looked under the floorboards downstairs - could be (completely wild guess) rise in water table re-damping old spillage down there.

Yes, the ceiling was taken down, because of previous leak 2 years ago. It went for a while and has come back this week as bad as ever, but we had been away for a week.
