Some people say this should be under wood work but I think painters

I have stained some birch ply with Manns Driftwood stain and when wet it comes out the way I want as you can see in the first photo. Then it dries and loses the separation and clearness of grain that was so pronounced before.

I was going to finish it with Fiddes clear wax/oil but am now unsure whether that will bring the grain separation back or is there something else I can or should do to make it as clear as when I first put the stain on?

Thanks
