Staining Wood and Varnish?

Hello,

I recently bought these chairs from IKEA.

The description says that they are solid birch with a clear acrylic lacquer. The question is can I apply some sort of staining over the clear lacquer or do I need to sand this layer off for the stain the take effect.

You can apply wood stain over the top, would need removing if you want to dye the timber.
