Stairs in victorian house

I have just removed the understair cupboard in my victorian house to create more space in the narrow corridor. I have found that the newel goes from the 1st to the ground, floor and I am now very reluctant to remove this as I am not sure whether it is helping to support the staircase.

Can anyone offer any advice on this?
