If he has technically resigned, its only because he was told by the PM and the Foreign Secretary that they'd lost confidence in him.

Apparently, Olly Robbins wasn't even promoted to be permanent secretary of the foreign office until after Mandelson had been appointed ambassador. Starmer may be claiming plausible deniability, but Olly Robbins has been scapegoated without a doubt.

The buck stops with Starmer. He is supposedly in charge. Ambassadors are nominated by the foreign office and appointed by the King on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.

In this case the Prime Minister failed to ask the right questions knowing full well Mandelson’s background. A 10 year old could have told him it was a bad idea so why the hell did he go ahead.

This Labour government are as bad as the Tories. Told today that there is 6 weeks worth of jet fuel in europe Reeves says its not a problem. My god they are going to get a shock in the upcoming elections. Only those on welfare and in a trades union will be voting for a Labour councillor.

Not sure that argument holds much water. Mandleson was vetted for the most senior overseas appointment and failed it. Surely with his somewhat dubious history Starmer would have wanted to know the details?

In this case of course he should have been told. But he decided he wanted Mandy and the official made a semi political decision to keep quiet. There would have been a chat between Robins and McSweenie though.

Hadn't heard about that but was reading about Starmer getting ticked off by the speaker for simply not answering questions at PMQ.
