I figured that - with the difference in both torque and blows-per-minute - it would be a more powerful hammer drill, which would make a difference when it came to drilling in bricks/etc?

As far as I can tell the BHP453 is a warmed over version of the older 12, 14.4 and 18 volt drills like the 6281 and 8281 which probably explains its lower cost (BTW there was nothing wrong with those drills in use). In physical terms it is longer than a BHP452 so getting it into tight spaces is more difficult, but the same applies to the BHP451 - it's bigger and heavier, too. I agree that the BHP451 is certainly a lot better for masonry drilling than the BHP452 or BHP453, but it still won't drill blue engineering brick or some harder stones without a real struggle. For that you need an SDS hammer drill not an impact and that's why I'd go for a drill/driver and an SDS drill because a BFR453 + a Ryobi ERH710 corded SDS would work out at about £113......

they have gone up in price,and the bigger set they do is now a few quid cheaper .
