you wouldn't put 10cm in though, you put foam boards under it for warmth.. so it would probably be 50mm of screed or so..

Yeh... as above. It'd be easier to make up the difference in level with insulation and screed. And... if you want a quick process, then you can look into a quick drying screed.

Thanks for that, I'll take a look - it might not be as expensive as first thought so will try and sort it out.

depending on the existing floor it might be worth putting down a damp proof membrane..

The floor doesn't get damp and I presume it has a membrane - although not 100% sure. It's a concrete floor

Normal building practice is to apply a membrane onto the slab before applyign the insulation and then the screed. An additional membrane is usually required between the insulation and screed too. As it's already exposed, you may as well install one.
