Hi everyone, had to change the oil pump and photosensor on a sterling burner earlier, everything seemed to be ok on fire up, until after 45 (approx) seconds, the burner "missed". It didnt lock out, pump pressure remained the same and the burner fired again after 5 seconds. It continues to do this every 45 seconds,. Any help/suggestions?! Thanks

Air?

Try bleeding it.

How long did you run it for?

Was there a click when the flame cut?

Hi Paul, yea i bled it, i ran the burner for apporx 5 mins, it done this once every 45 seconds, boilers runs as it should, then sounds like the flame has stopped but still in purge mode, then ignites again and repeats, the pump, coil and photosensor were all replaced due to being faulty/broken.

Unfortunately the only way you can see if the flame cuts is to run it out of the boiler.

This way you can see if the electrodes are sparking.

If new pump, then new solenoid valve & coil. Could be fuel supply. Have you checked filters etc? After standing, then it will run for a few mins until the supply starts to dry up, then starves the pump. What is the boiler? B/F or C/F? Is there a tiger loop? Is tank higher than burner?

If a new oil pump has been fitted, has the oil pressure been set correctly?
has the burner been set using a flue gas anyliser? a Sterling burner should be running at 11.8% CO2 if over-aired, the flame may well keep dropping out. ;)

Dont ever rule out the nozzle, as they can sometimes do this and short cycle the burner. Also these burners have very limited sight for the photocell to sense the flame, some have a small notch on one of the blast tube vanes which can be opened out a little with a small flat bladed screwdriver to alleviate the problem.

Is the photocell a standard length or the extended 80mm length? Also, when in place, do the electrode leads obscure the view? To check, take off the blast tube and check the route of the leads with the photocell in place.
