I'm restoring some cupboards and on the bottom of one there was some of that adhesive kitchen shelf covering. The varnish underneath looks perfect except wnen I took the covering off, the adhesive stayed. Any way I can get the adhesive off without wrecking the varnish.

Thanks Kev ....

try white spirit.

If it is a shellac varnish, it dissolves in alcohol but not white spirit.

If it is a polyurathene varnish it is very hard and will withstand cleaning.

Try a little area with nail polish remover.

Also, WD40 is known to remove some adhesives.

lighter fuel, unlike other suggestions leaves no residue and no risk of damage.
