Stone lintel removal

What’s the best way to cut through a stone lintel over a fire place? I have one that goes the full width and I only want to cut out the bit over the opening not the bearing

I'm a little worried. The lintel will be there for a reason, removing any of it is not a good idea.

I'm presuming the brickwork above the opening is still there.

Stitch drill then bolster or masonry chisel - preferably in a small breaker.
