Have a dripping stop cock, which will not stop dripping whether the stop cock is closed, open or halfway, it seems to be coming from the spindle. I understand this can be fixed by wrapping wool around the spindle having first unscrewed the retaining nut. My question is can this be done with the water still on ?? - as I don't know where the external stop cock is. Thanks in advance

Greased string not wool..Yes can be done live...but ask your water Co. to locate their stopcock for you

It's best to turn the stop cock off before undoing the gland nut otherwise you might get a squirt rathern than a drip.
Some people on here have recommended wrapping ptfe tape round the spindle, below the nut. Tighten the nut until it just grips the spindle so you can still turn it ( the spindle).

Many thanks for your help lads - job done and complete, although I did use vaseline and wool !! - does the wool colour come into play, as it was a yukkie shade of purple !! :) :)

Always thought the easiest way to stop a c*ck dripping was to put on a duffle coat with the hood up and visit the local clinic  :D

Just had the same problem with an old stop tap. Gave the gland nut a bit of a turn and all is lovely.

Even lubed the shaft of the tap with a bit of vaseline to ease the movement some.

Fingers crossed it's all good
