My uncle has asked me to take away a old storage electric heater to be dump. I've not seen it yet but I understand some of the old storage heater contains asbestos. I don't want to take it apart if this is the case so how will I know and where is this asbestos inside ? Is there a manufacter plate info on the back or something for me to see ? If it has asbestos does anyone know the correct way of disposal it.

i think its normal practice just to assume all old storage heaters contain asbestos (you don't want to take apart something that might contain it)

it needs to be double bagged in suitable bags and then taken to a specialist disposal company (who will almost certainly tell you what type of bags they want you to put it in)

when I worked for the local electricity board we often used to remove old storage heaters, the old big free standing ones were considerd likely to contain asbestos, the slimline wall fixed are usually ok, find out what make it is and contact the makers, common brands are creda, dimplex, unidare or maybe the HSE, if it does contain asbestos it could be expensive to deal with

which is why people just dump them

NOTE: i do NOT recommend you dump it. get rid of it safely

Thanks lads,

You would've thought the government or council give you a discount to prevent people dumping it

Masona,

my local civic amenity tip have facilities for the disposal of asbestos now.

All they ask is that the material is double bagged. I think you will probably have to remove the material from the heater first though?

And watch your back... Very heavy!
