....what are the effects of laying laminate on top of old laminate flooring? I know this is not the norm to do but I wanted to put laminate through two rooms, however the only way the floor will be level for both rooms is to put the laminate on top of old laminate in one room.......if it really is a bad idea, i will put a threshold strip to take into account the differences.

You can do what you want because laminate or carpet it is not the load bearing surface. Its a matter of style only. Three problems I foresee is relative/sliding movement between the 2 laminates, the creation of an air cushion between them, which you feel when you walk on it and the crackling noise you might experience if grit gets trapped between them. I would sandwich a thin layer of foam underlay and hope for the best
