Structural engineer calculations

I have been chatting to building control and I need a structural engineer to do some calculations for an RSJ we will be using on an extension to open up the back wall of the house.

Can someone explain to me exactly what this is? And where do I find a structural engineer? Yellow pages?

When you take a wall out at ground level, something has to take the wall's place to support the load from above.
That 'something' is usually a steel beam. To ensure that the steel beam is strong enough and of the correct size, an engineer needs to check this by working out the load to be supported, and relating this to a suitable beam size.
Those are structural calculations.
