stuck on pre-wash

We have just moved into a house with a Philips whirlpool dishwasher which has probably been unused for a while. When we turn it on to any programme it just does a 10 minute rinse and then stops and the start button beeps constantly. The manual indicates that it might be something to do with the water softening but we have tried topping up the salt container but with no effect. Any ideas why this happens? Thanks

Is there a reset button/buttons.Try and reset the programme.

I used to be a domestic appliance service engineer and the problem could be a seized pump.As the pump is full of water,when it hasn't been used for a while this can sometimes happen.
