Hi, I’ve replaced several tap valves but never a shower one. I’m at a point where I can get a socket over the bolt using a rachet to apply force, but it will not budge. I slipped, putting pressure on and it has rounded the edges of the six sided part of the valve slightly, it’s ok, but my fear is it’ll happen again and I’ve lost the chance to get it out.

I used an impact deep socket - six sided.

would a chrome socket be better than an impact socket?

Use an impact driver - I don’t have an impact wrench?

Would applying heat help? Is so using what? and how much heat?

Any other tips or tricks to remove it?

And if I can’t get it out, what can I do?

Thanks in advance!

A full hexagon impact socket is the way to go, ideally with an impact wrench. Press the wrench like hell when you are using it!
I’ll stick my neck out here and say that a chrome vanadium socket is useable as the insert shouldn’t be that tight, but a full hexagon is better.
I don’t think heat is a great help here.....but an impact wrench should shift it.
Wishing you luck!

Good question! I thought I’d have to take it out to match it first. Is there a way to match it in situ?
