Hi All

I have just had two rooms knocked into one and want to loose one of the doors into the (now) one room. Im planning on stripping the architrave and door stop, screw a cls timber studwork to the remaining frame and add some extra supports to this frame. Then pack with rockwool and screw a sheet of 12.5mm plasterboard each side. I will set the plasterboard 4-5mm inset to allow for the layer of skim to finish.

The question is this - should I reinforce the joint between plasterboard and original wall before skimming and if so how? I'm guessing the adhesive scrim wouldnt take to the wall too well? Or should I try and bevel the wall where it meets the plasterboard and just skim?

Cheers

You may have trouble with the door frame itself. Before you can plaster over the face of this, it will need to be wired over. If it's too close to the finished surface, this may not be possible. Instead it would be best to remove this as well and then fit your framework to the raw ends of the masonary.

Before you fit the plasterboard, remove a band (of about 2 inches width) of the existing plaster where it borders the opening.

Once the plasterboard is in place, replace the plaster you just removed, but only up to the level of the face of the plasterboard.

Put scrim (self adhesive stuff is ideal) around the edge of the plasterboard. (half on the board, the other on your new plaster).

finally, plaster right across the whole area to finish.

That makes sense! Cheers. As for the door frame I came to the same conclusion last night, looking at it again it was obvious the frame would have to come out.
