Make a gallows bracket from say 3x2 studwork or CLS and clad in MDF, fill, sand and paint. If fact you don't really need the diagonal on the gallows bracket as the MDF will act as the brace. Thats how I made this one.

Thanks Jason

The top 'box' section is built and fixed to the wall. As you suggested it was built with a stud frame and MDF panels attached.

But how do I make the curved 'brackets' at each side?

Regards

It was the brackets I was talking about not the main hood. Cut the curve into 4 pieces of MDF, fix one to each side of your 3x2 brackets and then bend a thin 2-4mm MDF strip over the front edge and glue & pin it in place. Once the glue is dry fill, sand and paint.
