Well Brexit is proof no nation state can leave.

What it proves is that leaving is far more complicated and takes far more time to do properly, than the gung-ho Brexanatics would have you believe.

And irony of all ironies - the fundamental reason that it is complicated and time consuming is the very nature of the EU that the Brexanatics object to. I wonder how many of our own "knuckle-headed lunatics" here have bothered to listen to that speech by Ivan Rogers, or to what Vince Cable said about the WTO?

It also proves that however hard/easy quick/slow it could be, it becomes a total cluster**** when it is used by a bunch of squabbling incompetents to either try and close, or profit from, the fissures in the Tory party over EU membership, which have been there so long that they cannot be closed. The conflicting pro-and anti-EU wings in the party have done for at least 3 previous Tory PMs, are about to do for a 4th, and I'm pretty confident that unless the party fragments they will do for whoever succeeds her.

Afaik it was written into the Marshtrict treaty that they all signed up to years ago

Maastricht.

But it could only have been a best-guess for how long would be needed, so might have been wrong, and it certainly would not have assumed that a country would waste most of it arguing with itself. It would have assumed that a country would know what it wanted, would understand what was possible and what was not, and that 2 years would be enough time from a starting point like that.

"Complicated and time consuming" is not the same as "impossible".

And it's also not the same as the ease and speed with which new trade deals and a new relationship with the EU would be negotiated which were promised by the Leave campaign.

Don't conflate trade agreements and specific trade deals.

That the EU has a trade agreement with countries, and/or that as an EU member we are not allowed to enter into our own trade agreements, does not prevent us from cultivating business relationships at all levels to persuade those countries, and customers in those countries, to buy our stuff rather than French stuff, for example.
