hi all Iv been looking through the forum and found some helpful posts but just want to check my wiring - I can’t find any that has the same as mine - the existing L to L loop. Do I need to recreate that in the Nest too and if so where does that go?
Many thanks

The BDR91 (L) terminals are both the same in that they are connected together electrically inside the BDR91, the second is just provided for convenience. That link someone has inserted between them is completely pointless as they are already interconnected.

BDR91 (L) = Hive (L)
BDR91 (N) = Hive (N)
BDR91 (A) = Hive (1) Common
BDR91 (B) = Hive (3) Heating on

No additional link is required at the Hive. The way that it is wired could possibly indicate that your boiler requires 'voltage free' switching. If so adding a link may cause serious damage to your boiler.

Thanks Stem, not sure what you mean by single channel - i have the T3028GB and gas boiler is a Worcester Greenstar Si Compact. When you say adding a link could cause serious damage to my boiler, should i not install the nest or not have a link as in the BDR91?
Just connect the 4 wires as above?

My apologies I have given you instructions for wiring to Hive, when you actually said Nest. Ignore the above and use below for Nest. No wonder you were confused Hive comes in two versions, Nest doesn't.

BDR91 (L) = Nest (L)
BDR91 (N) = Nest (N)
BDR91 (A) = Nest (2) Heating Common
BDR91 (B) = Nest (3) Heating on

Here also no extra links required.

As you don't mention any hot water control, I assume your version of the boiler is a combi, and that you don't have hot water that needs connecting to the Nest too.

Stem no worries appreciate the reply - you are correct its a combi. I assume then the link is pointless - strange that they did that?!

Yes completely pointless they are already joined together.

Whoever originally installed it probably just saw two terminals marked L and thought both needed connecting to the incoming live supply. Not the first time I've seen it either.

Not the first time I've seen it either.
Do you carry out many installations/diagnosis? If so then I would assume you employ the services of a RGI in order to carry out 26 (9) checks?
I only ask as recent posts of yours refer to numerous on-site visits that you have attended.

My normal job is as an electrical engineer for a company that manufacture automated production processes. However, over the years I have had several friends that are either RGI's, or employ RGI's to work for them that I help out electrically when they, or their usual sparkies get stuck. Normally this would be with modifications to an existing installation, or with faultfinding. The vast majority of the time I help them over the phone or email them a CAD wiring diagram, but occasionally, I attend site to assist them. With any new system, they will always complete the final installation and then commission it.

Most combi's are quite straightforward to wire, so they can do that on their own. It's usually S-Plan & Y-Plan conversions that I get to see, so there's usually no need to open up the boiler to access their wiring terminals then anyway.

Interestingly, a colleague recently had a new combi boiler (Ideal Vogue Gen 2) fitted along with a Nest Thermostat that he specifically requested, specifying that he wanted to used Open Therm. The Gas Safe installer didn't understand OT, so wired it up to the normal way with the dry contacts. My colleague who works in software (Brilliant guy, but not good with wires) asked me if I could change it over to OT, so I arranged to meet the RGI there who removed the boiler cover, watched me change the wiring over, replaced the cover and left, and that's it. Not a single check made! and to coin a phrase "Not the first time I've seen that either"

Also, when I said:
Not the first time I've seen it either.
I don't recall mentioning seeing it "on-site" It could well have been in another thread on here.

I trust that clarifies your enquiry.

Stem jus let you know i got Nest fitted and all going well so far - was pretty simple to be fair

Thanks again - and not the first time iv seen you thanked either ;)
