swapping light switch

what is the best way to re-route the cable of a switch to another location?

I want to hang the lounge door so it opens properly (and not closes onto the room) but have completely forgotten about swapping the the light switch for the lounge to the 'correct' side. Upstairs is all carpeted so not able to get to the circuit.

The cable is not longer enough to just pull out and re-route. In effect i need to extend the cable

Which way is proper?

Or any other ideas?

Then you are going to have to take the carpet up.

I still fancy doing it from dowstairs (which is not decorated) - Could I make a hole in the ceiling big enough to rummage about it, add a JB and take of the new cable that way? Is that allowed?

Only if the joint box remains accesible for inspection at a later date.

Would you be happy with a blank plate at the position of the old switch? You could then run a cable from there to the new switch position, and join the wires behind the new blank plate.

I guess a blanking plate is an option - can you get small discreet ones that blend in or are paintable?

you could fit the blanking plate AT the ceiling - or even ON the ceiling if you wish. Shouldn't look too bad then.

decided to go the sensible route and take up the floor boards, can't get good enough access to existing wires, so will have to join them with a JB - just before I do, what type do I need?? 10AMP?

If you're taking up the floorboards why can't you access the switch cable at the rose?

what I should have said was, i've taken up a smidgen of the floor, enough to get at the cables - they are in a metal conduit, so easily pulled out - getting at the ceiling rose would mean a very messy and very un-wife friendly job!

put a pull cord in. this is the least amount of work, which it appears what you want or put a load of surface mini trunking in

Er... these wires in conduit wouldn't happen to be sheathed in waxed cotton over rubber, would they? Is one of them a circuit protective conductor (earth)? S o d your carpet matey, you may actually need a rewire.
