hi two lights in garage come on at same time from one switch want to change switch so that they can be independant of each other any help appreciated

The lights will be linked across each other via the swtich, so that will need to be altered. So you can loop in a phase and neutral to second light, then take a switch for it.

hi thanks for that but can i use one switch plate with two switches on it cheers andy

Look at Prenticeboyofderry's second picture of the ceiling rose.
If you assume that is first ceiling rose currently leading to the (new 2 gang switch), then you will need to make sure that second ceiling rose is wired in a similar way - except that their will be only one line (red/brown) going to the loop centre terminals, one netural (black/blue) going to the neutral block and the earth to the earth block.
From the second ceiling rose you will need to run 1mm T&E back to the new two gang switch. At the ceiling rose the brown cable goes into the loop terminal, the blue (with brown sleeving) goes to the live terminal and the earth to the earth terminal.
At the switch the brown goes to common and the blue (with red sleeving) goes to L1 - earth to earth.
