Sycamore tree

I'm not sure I can get to the value that the tree was wroth many £100ks. Some have it valued at between 300-600k.
  • Over £5,000: Maximum sentence is 10 years imprisonment in Crown Court.
  • Under £5,000: Maximum sentence is 3 months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to £2,500 in Magistrates' Court.
Pretty sure most tree surgeons would section the tree and sell it on for mdf rather than getting long boards out of it.

All for a giant weed?
I cut a sycamore down in the garden, ground the stump , and it was self seeding 20 years later. They saplings would grow 3/ or 4 feet in a year, then take off if not removed. Horrible tree, though granted they look nice in a large field setting. The roots of the felled tree had probably affected the foundations of the wall itself.

in this case YES - keep them locked up until its fully grown

Put up Taxes and build more prisons - lets stamp out crime - the namby pamby liberal lefts long experiment into being more understanding and more forgiving has failed - country is getting out of control

Look at Saudi Arabia into how harsh sentencing stamps out crime

Saudi v UK

Total crimes per 10003.88
Ranked 71st.
109.96
Ranked 4th. 28 times more than Saudi Arabia
also executes children.

It isn’t any tree it and more importantly the wall they damaged are icons. Rather than prison which I have to pay for, I’d have them carry out dry stone walling, restoring an area to a natural habitat and restoring gardens for the elderly/inferm. We have an area of waste scrubland by us that needs turning into a wild life refuge. They can start on that.

If it was so important why wasn’t the tree subject to a TPO? There are parallels with the Enfield Oak which also wasn’t subject of a preserve order, the difference being the brewery owned it so couldn’t be charged with criminal damage. Some kind of community work like tree planting and clearance would be as effective as prison.

Dunno what the fuss is about. Those two should be commended for ridding the countryside of a giant weed.

.

TPO's are only for law abiding citizens. There is a parcel of land not too far from where we live that someone had bought to develop for houses. Nobody wanted it, the local councillor got involved and they put TPO's on the trees that were on it. First bank holiday after that, 'someone' cut them all down. So far, planners have refused planning permission but nobody will be surprised if they eventually allow it one day.

The idea of a TPO is to protect the tree from the owner. The owner wanted to protect it so there was no need for a TPO.

depends on the context - that welsh lad Rudakubana was only 17 when he slaughtered those children
we could say the UK jail children for 52 years - and that would not sound good out of context.

teenagers of that age (often referred to as children by the do-gooders) cause mayhem within society - we should absolutely be jailing them

But is it fair to take biological age as the criteria?

Note: not intended to stir up another debate about biology.

its because they keep going back for little sentences

Why is there only a fraction of the crimes in Saudi? is it because they are more interested in the rights of the law abiding, and give little rights to the criminals - a sort of entire juxtaposition to our own virtue signally criminal justice system
I've provided you with the evidence, which proves tougher sentences don't lower crime.

Why are you unable to absorb facts, evidence, data?

Maybe it's because they have absolutely barbaric punishments like stoning people to death and cutting peoples hands and feet off.

Singapore has the rattan cane, it causes do much damage every stroke cuts right through the flesh and by time all the strokes are done the skin has peel away completely......is that what you would like

Please stop being silly nobody supports what he did and people would only use the term child if that's what the law defines

quote from internet;
Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates globally. In 2023, the overall crime rate was 1,188 per 100,000 population. While petty crimes like pickpocketing are rare, scams and cybercrimes have seen an increase, with a rate of 924 per 100,000 population in 2023. Violent crimes are extremely rare, with a rate of 1 per 100,000 in 2023.
Singapore's low crime rate is a result of a combination of factors, including strict laws, effective law enforcement, and a strong rule of law. These factors, coupled with a high level of public confidence in the police and a culture that emphasizes public discipline, contribute to a generally safe and secure environmen

what an enviable crime rate - I don't give two hoots about the criminals that taint our country so much
too much virtue signalling here

And then another country with a similar penal system (death penalty etc) USA, the crime rate is worse than that of the UK.

The fact is that there is no deterrent to crime, even in Singapore.
