Standard?

Won't the symbol library you need depend on which tool you use, eg Autocad?

There are standard formats, such as PNG, TIFF, DXF, DWG but it will almost certainly be easier to use a library designed for full integration into your particular package, e.g. .BLK (I think) for AutoCad, .VSS/.VST for Visio...

IGES is the 'original' standard CAD format, started in the early 80's. For 2D stuff you should have no problems with any decent CAD package editing it (it is also text editable).

If you want a format for review which is openable by all (but not to edit) I suggest you use EMF, which is a vector scalable format from the dawn of Windows 3.1.

BS60617 (The UK version) can be obtained from BSonline by logging on at a library that allows access.

It can be downloaded and viewed to show the symbols.
