T and E outside?

Not sure I’d be using t&e outside at all, especially underground
I can think of no reason for not using T+E underground, provided that it has adequate (and lasting') mechanical protection.

T+E in metal conduit is not materially different from SWA, is it?

It would corrode the conduit from the inside and eventually perforate it.
I suppose so, but I think that 'eventually' could be an extremely long time ;) ... and 'perforations', per se, would presumably have no adverse effect - only if the conduit completely disintegrated would it cease providing mechanical protection to the cable

Last year I removed some galvanised steel conduit (definitely without sealed joints!) which had been buried in my garden since before I moved in (maybe long before), over 40 years ago, and it was still fine, other than for some patches of surface corrosion.

Having said all that, like you I would use SWA, even though it provides much less mechanical protection than steel conduit.
