I have a pine table and want to take about 4mm off to remove some holes full of wood filler. What is the best way to do this? I have looked at buying a belt sander from Argos- would this do the job?
Your be much better off planing it down with a power planer with a sharp blade to take off that much. 4mm doesn't sound like a lot but on a whole table top it is! Plane it down by 3mm and then then finish it with a sander.
If you use a belt sander for the whole thing you will end up with a smoothish table ready for re-finishing but it will be all sort of high and low spots.
If you have never used a planer have a quick read online to find out the technique. To get a level surface you need to move diagonally as well as along the grain.
