Hello,

We have taken down the wall between the lounge and the kitchen. There is now a RSJ beam to support the floor above.

What are the requirements for fire safety?

We need to plaster the beam and the kitchen ceiling with fire retardant boards. We need to install mains powered fire alarms in the lounge, the stairs and the upstairs corridor.

Do we need to redo the floor of the room above the kitchen? It is currently floor boards. I was told to put 3/4" chipboard I believe, is that accurate?

Plasterboard is fire resistant.

You don't need to alter the upper floor boards.

Fire detection depends on the layout, but something is better than nothing
