Hello all,

I am doing some research on tank cutters, and was wondering if anyone would be able to help me.

Do any of you have any experience using tank cutters? If so, what did you use them for and how did you use them (i.e. with a power drill, carpenters brace etc.) Which model did you find most effective?

Thank you in anticipation of your help! :)

Bloomin' vicious things, the original tank cutter......for me its a hole saw every time but I have used mine for cutting through plasterboard for ceiling spot lamps.
I use my battery drill - I don't think you would do too well with a carpenters brace.
John :)

the only tank cutter I have used was for cutting copper cylinders in the day when we used to fit "sidewinders" to direct cylinders to make them indirect, doubt very much if you are trying to do that these days if you are you are a real tight arse, just buy the correct cylinder , if its a plastic tank just heat up the required pipe size and push it through.

Thank you all for your help.

Am I right in thinking that hole saws are much more commonly used than tank cutters these days? Do they perform exactly the same jobs?

This shouldn't be done, the TB, Installation of Thermoplastic CWSC... specifically forbids it.

No one uses them anymore, cordless drill and and as you say, a holesaw.

Why is this the case? What advantages does a hole saw have over a tank cutter?

Aren't most tank cutters adjustable so you only need one tool instead of many of different sizes (like the holesaw)?

Two big ones, speed and reliability, tank cutters are a pain to measure in and even the best ones last about 5 minutes

Tradesmen can write off the cost of tools as they are tax deductible, so cost is not an issue and you can get a case of them with all the common sizes for not much money anyway. The ease and speed far exceed any perceived benefits of tank cutters

A holesaw has multi teeth and gives a nice even pressure on the hole it is drilling....a tank cutter has one tooth and frequently digs in when its being used.
Please don't use a tank cutter on a plastic tank!
John :)
