I was going to use my recently acquired Rothenberger tap re-seater (3/8", 1/2" and 3/4") to clean the mixer tap seats in a 40 year old house but the tool would not screw in to the tap base.

Do older taps use a different thread on the tap valve collars?

I would have thought the 1/2" would screw into that tap. I doubt if it is anywhere near the age of the house.
Having said that, I don't know what you paid for the kit, but it would have gone a long way towards a new tap. It looks like someone's had a right fit with that one.

When I say recently acquired, maybe about a year ago. I purchased it to clean the all the tap seats in my house. Also fitted new washers.

The taps in question are in my aunt's house. Cleaned up tap seats and new washers will sort the job out and stop the slight drip caused by pitted seats.

1/2" would be the standard size, not sure why your tool won't fit, it should. That's a standard contract deck mixer tap and it should use standard 1/2" valves.

BTW it's a very rare occurrence when the seats need re-ground, lucky if I used my re-seating tool half a dozen times in all my days doing this. Bang a couple of new washers into it and clean out and re-grease the internal threads and it should be fine.

I had another look at it and the thread on the tap valve is slightly larger diameter than the largest diameter of the (3/8", 1/2" and 3/4") re-seater tool .
