I have a problem with my central heating system but I do not know what is causing it. The boiler works fine and is turning on/off at the correct time and heats up the water and normally I would have plenty of hot water and cental heating when required.
Recently I isolated 3 radiators down stairs by closing the valves completely on the bottom right hand side of them. Following that the water at the taps and shower would either be just lukewarm or there would be hot water but only for a short space of time. When I opened the radiators back up, while the boiler was heating the water, within 5minutes I had full hot again at the taps. I thought radiators are supposed to be in parallel to the system and as such should not have any affect on the water temperature.
For information, I have a Potterton Suprima boiler which is located in the downstairs utility room heating a hot water tank in the airing cupboard upstairs. There is a 3-way valve in the airing cupboard which is faulty and a plumber will be fixing this this week. There is a fault with the electronics on the actuator which has locked it open, so when the boiler is heating up the water the radiators come on, hence why I turned some of the radiators off in the first place. Still I would not have expected by turning off raidiators that they would affect my hot water, or am I wrong and would this be expected with this faulty 3-way valve? Or could there be a fault with the plumbing of the heating system? I have only recently moved into the house and this is the first time I have isolated any of the radiators so I do not know if it has been a recurring problem in the past.
