Hi all,
we are doing some major work to our house - Loft conversion and extension- some of which we are doing ourselves and some by trades.
The query I have is: as a home owner can I leagally shut of the valve at my gas meter disconect the pipe going to the boiler ( no other gas appliances or pipework fitted) and Rip out and dispose of old boiler and unwanted pipework?

Many thanks
Neil

is it legal yes it is. However you`d be better off getting someone who knows what they are doing

it is only legal to work on gas if you are competent to do so. This means you can correctly isolate the pipework using the appropriate fittings and properly test that there is no escape of gas on the installation. It sounds to me that you are planning on turning off the isolation valve then removing the pipework, leaving an open ended piece of pipe. This would be classed as dangerous and reportable, so one would assume your not competent.
A local RGI can probably isolate the meter for you for a very small fee and you can be safe in the knowledge you won't be doing more work than you intended ;)

Thanks for the reply's,
I actually intend to shut off the valve at the meter- cut the pipe leaving a 6" tail to the meter- disconnecting that tail and soldering a stopend on- then reconnecting the tail and testing with leak detection fluid for any leaks with the valve open and closed- then leaving valve closed until the job is far enough along to need the new boiler supplied and fitted(legally)
As I stated earlier there is only one pipe supplying one boiler (4` away) so no need to worry about identification.
Many Thanks
Neil

P.S. local RGI quoted £3160.00 to supply and fit 1 Vaillant Ecotec 831 Combi.
Laugh! I laughed so hard I dribbled.

if you start soldering on pipework that has the meter still connected you could cause an explosion.

it is only legal to work on gas if you are competent to do so

Thanks for your input mickyg but I clearly stated that I would be disconnecting that tail-soldering the stopend and then reconnecting it.

Neil

ok sorry i misunderstood. That would be ok normally. However I would never condone DIY gas work

Thanks for your apology mickyg,
I do appreciate the position you are in - I myself am a sparks so I have some idea of what dealing with dangerous stuff is about and would never want go give bad advice or advice that would come back and slap me in the face but as you should know you are safe on here.

The thing that I find intriguing is that none of you rgi's have commented on the quote of over £3000 to supply and fit the boiler.

SHAME ON YOU

how can anyone pass comment on a price given?? hes seen the job, we havnt. obviously a guess, but with all the indepth explaination you gave with the job id say it was cheap.
does your name relate to your last attempt at soldering a gas pipe?

Sticks and stones ROGUETRADER

After doing my homework (good advice for anyone wishing to employ any trade) and obtaining a number of quotes - as you all know £3000+ is over DOUBLE what it should be.

ROGUETRADER - I would like you to please justify approx £2000 for fitting a boiler, straight swap (horizontal flue)- installing 1200mmm of 15mm copper with 2 elbows to the meter - powerflush - inhibitor - commision - register with Dogs
"All done in a day mate"

LoL ROGUETRADER LOL

I said it berore! I'll say it again "SHAME ON YOU"
