Tenon and mortis joints in door

What is the best way to join the rales and styles of an external door that is going to be painted ? I know that tenon and mortis joints are very strong but take some time to make. If you put strong dowels across the joints wouldn't that suffice.
 
most cheapish modern doors using moulded edgings do exactly that
the mouldings give around 3 time the surface area for glue to hold and 10mm dowels give extra support
