How does the customer know it's genuine and not a scam?

Google the number, often they appear with a scam notice.

Get the phone number from your bill for electricity north west and ring them to ask if they have such a service.

Whilst I agree that he needs to 'independently' find the phone number, and then ask them about the text, I'm not at all sure that the DNO's phone number will appear on his (supplier's) electricity bill, will it?

However, there's an easy solution. If one dials 105 from any phone, one automatically gets connected to the appropriate DNO.

I get messages from the same number claiming to be ENWS, I just ignore them

Forward the text to 7726 for investigation. They do act!
